York International Scholarship is committed to giving a broad demographic of students access to a high-quality, research-intensive learning environment dedicated to the public good. International students who attend York University have access to various academic, financial, and otherwise supports to help them meet their educational goals.
To be considered for the scholarships and awards below, you must submit the International Student Scholarship & Award Application. These scholarships and awards are for applicants with exceptional academic profiles who demonstrate leadership through community service or excellence in the arts or sports. Students do not need an offer of admission to apply for York entrance awards and scholarships.

Admission Requirements for Master Scholarship
- You must have graduated from a recognized post-secondary institution holding an honors degree or equivalent. Some programs consider applicants with a three-year undergraduate degree and relevant work experience.
- Undergraduate degrees not designated as honors degrees may be acceptable as the equivalent of an undergraduate honors degree if they contain a minimum of 120 credits (typically, a four-year program with full-time enrolment), including the completion of a minimum of 6 credits at the fourth-year level at an accredited postsecondary institution.
- Three-year first-cycle undergraduate degrees from institutions that meet the criteria outlined in the Bologna Declaration may be acceptable as the equivalent of an undergraduate honors degree.
- If you completed your undergraduate or master’s studies outside Canada, you may need to complete additional courses to qualify for admission to a graduate program at York. Please contact the relevant program office for more information.
- Suppose you have completed a four-year undergraduate degree at an Ontario College of Applied Arts and Technology. You need to contact the Office of Admissions to add the requirement to your record. This will allow your transcript to be uploaded to continue the admission process.
- A minimum grade point average (GPA) of at least a “B” or equivalent is required. Most programs require at least a “B+” or equivalent. Your GPA is assessed over the last two years of undergraduate study (full-time or equivalent); if you have a master’s degree, we will use your highest level of education to calculate your GPA. Please be sure to check International Credential Equivalencies.
- Your GPA is a critical consideration in determining admissibility. Also, check the specific requirements of your program of choice. In rare cases, a program chooses to prioritize a candidate's professional or creative accomplishments or other relevant experiences, recommendations, portfolio, or test results.
English Language Proficiency for York International Scholarship
You may be required to provide proof of English Language Proficiency if you do not meet one of the following criteria:
Your first language is English; OR
You completed at least one year of full-time study at an accredited university in a country (or institution) where English is the official language of instruction.*
Minimum IELTS score for Undergraduate Students 6.5 and for Masters Students is 7.0
Benefits and Awards for York International Scholarship
1. TENTANDA VIA AWARD
45 domestic awards valued at $40,000 ($10,000 x 4 years)
15 international awards valued at $120,000 ($30,000 x 4 years)
Capturing the enduring spirit of York's motto, the Tentanda Via Award recognizes undergraduate students who have demonstrated resilience in overcoming significant personal barriers in pursuing university education and changemakers who are committed to progressive and sustainable development issues.
2. PRESIDENT'S INTERNATIONAL SCHOLARSHIP OF EXCELLENCE
20 international awards valued at $180,000 ($45,000 x 4 years)
The President's International Scholarship of Excellence will be awarded to international high school applicants who demonstrate academic excellence, commitment to volunteer work and extracurricular activities, and leadership skills. Recipients will represent various regions around the world and be referred to as 'President's International Scholars'.
3. YORK AUTOMATIC ENTRANCE SCHOLARSHIP
Our entrance scholarships are available to domestic high school applicants admitted to a direct-entry undergraduate program. This entrance scholarship is automatically applied, renewable at each year level, and can be regained when you recover the minimum required GPA. Recipients of this scholarship who elect to participate in an exchange program in years 2, 3 or 4 will also receive the York University Study Abroad Award, valued at $1,500.
Requirements for Scholarship Applicants
Must be an international student who is required to have a Study Permit to study in Canada
Must have applied to an undergraduate degree program at York that begins in Fall 2023
Must have applied to York directly from high school no more than two years after graduation and have no previous university or college studies (not applicable to Tentanda Via Award)
Must have an excellent academic record with a minimum “A” average or equivalent (where applicable)
Must have demonstrated leadership through community service or excellence in the arts, sports, or other areas of individual achievement (where applicable)
Must upload one letter of recommendation or other supporting documents as applicable
Must ensure all required documents are shown as “Received” in the York application (MyFile), by February 1, 2023 at 11:59:59pm, Eastern Time
Must complete and submit the online International Student Scholarship Application by February 1, 2023 at 11:59:59pm, Eastern Time

Deadlines exceptions:
Nursing: The application deadline for all Nursing programs is February 1.
Schulich School of Business (BBA) will not accept applications after the January 12 deadline.
