ETH Zurich University is not selective in its undergraduate admission procedures for Swiss students, and ETH Zurich is obliged to endow admission to every Swiss resident who carries the Matura. Applicants from alien nations must take either the consolidated or comprehensive entry exam. However, some applicants from several European nations are excused from this rule. An applicant can be admitted to ETH Zurich without verifiable educational records by passing the comprehensive entrance exam.

The Excellence Scholarship & Opportunity Programme (ESOP) helps students with a scholarship, mentorship, and a grid of the ETH Foundation. The scholarship covers the entire study and living expenditures during the Master's degree study.

ESOP is granted for the standard duration of the Master's program (three or four semesters) and applies to the schooling fee release.

How to write Pre-Proposal for a Master thesis

The pre-proposal will outline a potential Master's thesis that will function as input for the process leading toward your Master's thesis topic.

Describe your present conception for your thesis within 500 words on an individual sheet (references may not be considered).

Please use the below format if you find it helpful. Split your text into separate sections to give it a clear form. Use subheadings to create it more reader-friendly.

Structure

Title

Describe a short, compelling title that summarizes the scope of your pre-proposal.

Introduction

Provide a short intro to the topic. Then, set a context for your research and explain why it is crucial.

Objectives and goals

State the main research question(s) you want to address.

Methods of investigation/implementation

Explain the methods and techniques which you plan to use for your project. These methods will vary from one subject to another: e.g., concerning fieldwork, lab experiments,

modeling techniques, interdisciplinary collaboration, data acquisition, the infrastructure needed, software used, etc.

Background / prior work

List the main relevant work by others and the results you have achieved in your previous work investigations.

Timetable and milestones

Consider that the Master's thesis has to be completed within a given time (4-6 months, depending on the Master's program; check the duration of the program you are applying for in the correspondent regulations). Thus, the results of your project must be achievable in the given time.

State a realistic timetable for your project and mention the milestones you want to achieve.

References

List papers and publications you have cited in your preproposal or collected for further reading.

Use established scientific citation practice.

Note: The pre-proposal for the Master's thesis must be developed independently by yourself. This must be referenced appropriately if you refer to work already done at ETH Zurich or elsewhere. All forms of plagiarism are unacceptable and will disqualify your scholarship application. As part of the evaluation of your application, you are interviewed by one of the university professors or scientists; your project proposal will also be discussed.

Can Students work while studying in Switzerland?

International students may work 15 hours per week while their studies and full-time during the semester holidays. Students must be reported in all cases to the responsible immigration regimes. Students from outside the EU/EFTA region may only begin working six months after the commencement of their studies.
