The Norwegian authorities have announced that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs will close 5 overseas stations subsequent year, inclusive of 3 embassies, one embassy office, and one consulate general
Via a declaration issued on September nine, the government emphasized that the Ministry will increase the staff in some foreign missions in 2023, particularly in Europe, as a way to cope with the workload, Migrationvisportal.Com reports.
In this regard, the embassies with the purpose to be closed in 2023 are the ones in Bratislava (Slovakia), Colombo (Sri Lanka), and Pristina (Kosovo). At the identical time, the embassy office in Antananarivo (Madagascar) and the consulate general in Houston (U.S.A.) may also be closed next year.
“Norway’s diplomatic presence in Kosovo, Madagascar, Slovakia, and Sri Lanka will be handled in a different way, for example, from a nearby Norwegian embassy, or by appointing a home-based ambassador for the individual country,” the statement reads.
Norway presently has 101 foreign missions abroad, consisting of those which can be set to be closed. However, with these adjustments, Norway could have fewer foreign missions but more or less the identical number of diplomats posted as now.
“The Norwegian Foreign Service consists of more than 2,600 employees, of which around 800 in Oslo, more than 600 posted diplomats, and approximately 1,200 local employees who are employed directly by the foreign missions,” the statement explains.
In keeping with the authorities, Embassies just like the one in Bucharest, Kyiv, and Vilnius, together with the European delegation and the NATO delegation in Brussels, may be strengthened with extra Norwegian diplomats in 2023. Therefore, the Ministry of Overseas Affairs is considering additional reinforcements with diplomats or groups of workers employed regionally in different countries’ foreign missions in the EU.
Commenting on those adjustments, overseas Minister Anniken Huitfeldt added that the EU has contributed to EU harmony and reinforced cooperation for security and protection after the outbreak of the war in Ukraine. He emphasized that that is how Norway will fortify its diplomatic efforts inside the EU, and NATO, and decide on European Countries.
Further, Norway may even reinforce selected stations outside Europe with expatriate personnel in 2023. Meanwhile, extra nearby employees may be in deciding on overseas stations inside and outside Europe.
As the government explains, the increase in diplomats and neighborhood personnel in some foreign missions is specially related to the government’s objective to boom Norwegian exports.
The Minister of Overseas Affairs also stated that a lot is occurring inside the EU associated with the green transition and digitization, which offers awesome opportunities for the Norwegian industry and business.
